PUBLISHER’S NOTE
The protagonist of Through Thin Shirts
is a Jewish foren-sic pathologist, who had spent a year in
the crematoriums at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration
camp as an assistant to Josef Mengele in his infamous twin
studies. After the war, he emigrates to America, where he
changes his name to Chaim Potofsky and writes a play based
upon his experience. It is this play, Gateway to Hell,
that is the heart of the book. The reader is caught up not
only in Potofsky’s past life, but in Potofsky’s struggle to
find redemption through his relationship with a Puerto Rican
boy.
